How we use AI

A lot of software companies use AI. Most don't tell you where or how. This page does. We use AI at Meolea — to build the product and, in two specific places, inside the product itself. Here's the full picture.

The content you create on Meolea — your goodbye letters, your life story, your documents, your estate details, your trusted contacts — is stored on our servers in Germany and is never passed to any AI system. It does not train models. It is not processed by AI unless you choose a specific feature that involves it, and we always tell you what that feature does before you use it.

How we use AI to build Meolea

Like most teams, big and small, building software today, we use AI tools to work faster and more carefully. In all of these cases, your personal data is not involved. Even in the drafting of this page, we use AI to help us make it quick and simple, so we could focus on improving our products even more.

Coding

We use AI assistants to write, review, and debug code. We work in our own tools, though, and actual user data is never part of this process.

Content

Blog posts, UI text, and documentation are drafted with AI assistance and reviewed and edited by us before publication. No annoying “AI slop” ever!

Decisions

We use AI to think through design choices, explore edge cases, and structure product specs. This is entirely internal work.

Support

AI helps us summarise feedback and draft responses to support tickets. Personal account content is never shared with AI in this process.

Where AI appears in our products

There are two places inside Meolea where AI is part of what you experience. Both are opt-in. Both are private.

Companion (MeoleAI)

An AI trained for end-of-life conversations and bereavement support. You can talk to it about anything on your mind. Those conversations are always private and are never shared with trusted contacts, other users, or anyone at Meolea. The Companion has no access to the rest of your account unless you explicitly share something within the conversation yourself.

Obituary and notice drafting

Trusted contacts can use MeoleAI to help draft obituaries and tributes, drawing on the life story the owner has written. This only happens after a passing has been confirmed, and only if the trusted contact chooses to use the feature. The content stays within Meolea.

What we will not do

Really, never!

  • Use your personal content to train AI models…ours or anyone else’s.
  • Send your documents, letters, or trusted contact information to third-party AI providers.
  • Use AI to make decisions about your account, your access, or who receives your content after you pass.
  • Add AI features to your experience without telling you what they do and what data they involve.

A note on infrastructure. Meolea is hosted exclusively on Hetzner servers in Germany. Your data stays in the EU. Any AI features we build or integrate are evaluated against this: if a tool would require your personal data to leave EU-hosted infrastructure, we don’t use it for anything that touches your content.
